The 2009-10 season ushered in many changes to the WRPDIIHL. The schedule was shortened from 24 to 20 regular-season games and the power leagues which were a staple of the league setup for close to 30 years had been abolished in favor of new "geographical" based leagues. This also gave us a new formula for figuring out the playoff seedings which had everyone utterly confused until the official seeding announcements were made. We saw a lot of parity across all leagues, some upsets, some unexpected close games, and even some unexpected lopsided games. We saw Yorktown pull off a few playoff upsets to make it to the Division II championship game as the #7 seed and Lakeland/Panas make a statement that they have arrived by defeating Mamaroneck in the semi-finals to make it to the Division I championship game. We saw Rye lose a close one to Queensbury in the D2 state quarterfinal game and Suffern pull out an OT win against Williamsville North in D1 only to lose in OT to eventual state champion West Genesee the following weekend in Utica. Section 1 also continued to get more recognition around the state as we saw Sleepy Hollow/Irvington and Lakeland/Panas crack the NYS Sportswriters' poll for the first time in either program's history. We also had 10 of the 38 players who were named first team, second team, or honorable mention all-state come from Section 1, five of which were underclassmen, boding well for the future. Below are the details of the 2009-10 season. Enjoy. | |||||||||||
